Operation Catrimani II
Boa Vista (RR) – With the aim of suppressing the logistics of illegal mining and curbing environmental crimes in the Yanomami Indigenous Land (TIY), troops from Operation CATRIMANI II destroyed eleven airstrips for the use of aircraft between July 3 and 7, in the Campos Novos region.
In coordination with the Roraima Government House, the mission took place jointly with the Armed Forces, the National Force and IBAMA. After intelligence work, soldiers from the Catrimani Joint Command worked around the clock to disable the eleven airstrips. The difficulties imposed by the Amazon environment caused logistical setbacks that the teams overcame.
A total of four large, specialized engineering vehicles were involved in the uninterrupted fight against mining, including an excavator that assisted in the demolition of the airstrips, which were rendered unusable by “cuts” (deep trenches) made every 100 meters and with depths of up to 2m, preventing any aircraft from landing on the sites. The runways were destroyed in order of priority, according to joint planning with IBAMA.
Since April, Operation Catrimani II has carried out more than 2,000 raids in the Yanomami Indigenous Land, with the aim of preventing and repressing illegal mining activities, combating environmental crimes and cross-border illicit activities.
In June, the military carried out a new action to clear one of the illegal mining sites located in the Xitei region, near Surucucu.
