Rosário do Sul (RS) – On February 16, 2023, the Battle of Passo do Rosário, also known as the Battle of Ituzaingó, was commemorated on the margins of BR 290. Considered the biggest battle that took place on Brazilian soil, it took place on February 20th, 1827. This confrontation started with the revolt of the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata against the Empire of Brazil, due to the domination of the Cisplatina Province.

Present at the ceremony were the Commander of the 6th Armored Infantry Brigade (6th Bld Inf Bld) “Niederauer Brigade”, Brigadier General Marcelo Carvalho Ribeiro, the Commander of the 4th Combat Car Regiment (4th RCC), Cavalry Colonel Luis Felipe Martins Aguiar, host of the event, commanders of the Santa Maria and Alegrete garrison units, and authorities from the city of Rosário do Sul.

During the ceremony, the Commander of the 6th Bda Inf Bld emphasized “the importance of preserving our homeland’s history”, and that “a people that doesn’t preserve its heroes and history doesn’t know where it is going”.

The Battle of Passo do Rosário lends its name to the 4th RCC. At the site where the battle was fought, even today, a memorial marks the 800 dead and 350 wounded who fell on the battlefield. The heroes who fell in defense of the homeland helped maintain the integrity of our territory and demarcate the borders of southern Brazil.
