Not even a punctured tire can stop the new vehicles acquired by the Brazilian Navy (MB) to equip its Marine Corps. Even if they are hit, they manage to keep moving for another 50 kilometers on average, at a maximum speed of 48 km/h. All this without losing firepower, powered by 12.7mm and 7.62mm machine guns and a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

The last batch of four of these vehicles, out of a total of 12 acquired by MB from the US government as part of the PROADSUMUS strategic program, were delivered on Wednesday (17). The light wheeled armored vehicles, known as JLTVs, enhance the military’s amphibious and expeditionary capabilities, making it easier for troops to move inland without endangering the integrity of the personnel on board.

The model will reinforce naval military power in war operations, peace missions, humanitarian actions and in support of state actions. Some of the first units, received in 2023, have already been used, for example, in the most recent Guarantee of Law and Order, in the ports of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Itaguaí (RJ) and Santos (SP). They contributed to the success of the urban operation, dubbed “Lais de Guia” within the Navy.

According to the Commander of Marine Material, Vice Admiral Rogério Ramos Lage, the arrival of this latest batch “significantly increases the armored protection, mobility and shock action of the Marine Operational Groups, particularly those that have these assets in their composition”.

Background

The JLTV is a project run by the US Army and Marines, who deointsigned it to replace the high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles (HMMWV). The decision was based on the need to adapt to modern combat conditions and the good performance of the new model in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they withstood insurgent counter-attacks, such as roadside explosive devices.

In addition to the advantages already mentioned, the armoured vehicles can be used to infiltrate special operations troops into hostile territory, transport weapons for the Fire Support Companies of the Rifle Company Infantry Battalions, reconnoitre zones and axes of action, carry out patrols, establish observation points, carry out surveillance actions, expand communications and escort convoys.
