On modern battlefields, one striking trend stands out: technological weaponry is advancing at an unprecedented rate. The battlefields of the future will present threats from all directions and will become increasingly silent, significantly increasing the security risks for ground troops.

As opposing forces increasingly rely on similar advanced technologies, the challenge of effectively protecting troops and armored vehicles, and preparing countermeasures, becomes more complex. Experts unanimously agree that speed, precision and extensive information sharing will be more crucial than ever.

Today’s operating environments for ground forces are evolving rapidly, making the protection of armored vehicles particularly challenging. Attacks now come from all directions, often from above, leaving garrisons with only a few seconds to respond. This urgency highlights the need for automated systems. Self-protection systems that increase situational awareness, especially through laser detection, are becoming vital. However, these systems must cope with increasing complexity.

Wilfred Moore, Marketing Manager at Saab, explains: “The growing number of potential threats and signals keeps the armed forces constantly vigilant. More threats need to be detected and analyzed in a matter of seconds. Without automating these processes and equipping troops with modern systems, you’re already at a disadvantage.”

The LEDS-50 system meets these challenges by being adaptable to a wide range of vehicles. It provides precise information on the origin of an attack and the weapon system involved. LEDS-50 then allows for customized manual or fully automated decoys and countermeasure options. These range from multispectral masking to the deployment or integration of effectors such as remotely controlled weapon stations or infrared inhibitors. This enhanced situational awareness offers a crucial advantage by allowing forces to influence the outcome and impact of an attack, as well as providing essential data for after-action analysis.

As technology becomes more advanced, our defenses must also evolve.
