The Brazilian Maritime Authority, represented by the Directorate of Ports and Coasts (DPC) of the Brazilian Navy (MB), signed, this Friday (17), a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Group of Protection and Indemnity Clubs (IGP&I). The agreement aims at the cooperation of the parties in providing information for a fast and efficient response to serious maritime incidents involving vessels insured by IGP&I, particularly those incidents that include wreck removal operations or possible threats or environmental damage.

Another objective of the agreement is to expand the possibilities for joint training of the response teams, in addition to conducting post-incident evaluation exercises to identify lessons learned and possible areas for future improvements.

During the Memorandum signing event, the Director of Ports and Coasts, Vice-Admiral Sergio Renato Berna Salgueirinho, pointed out that the Navy has its subsidiary attributions established in the Complementary Law No. 97, in which it receives the role of Brazilian Maritime Authority, having as main attributions to provide safety to navigation and prevent environmental pollution from vessels. “After an extensive feasibility process, the DPC today expresses great satisfaction with the signing of this memorandum. It is expected that the bonds of friendship between the parties will be strengthened, so that new knowledge will be acquired and shared and, furthermore, its effects may produce positive reflexes in practice”, he stated.

Through the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding, it is established, preliminarily, the joint action between the parties. This contributes to a quick execution and more efficient responses to eventual serious incidents that may compromise the safety of navigation and the environment in Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters.

The IGP&I is a non-profit association, of international renown, constituted by the twelve main Protection and Indemnity Associations. Its actions are focused on providing assistance to its members in responding to maritime incidents in which they are involved, in repairing damages to the environment, and in compensating victims.
