Brazilian Army's War Arsenal tests aiming system for heavy mortarBrazilian Army's War Arsenal tests aiming system for heavy mortar

Rio de Janeiro (RJ) – The War Arsenal in Rio conducted a series of tests for the certification of the Inertial Targeting System on the 120 mm Heavy Mortar. The activities took place at the Army’s Evaluation Center, from May 9 to 12, in partnership with Safran Eletronics & Defense Brasil, the company that produces the equipment.

The mortar’s aiming system works from last generation gyroscopic sensors, corresponding to the three axes of the 120 mm M2A1 R Heavy Mortar. The system collects and automatically processes several data. Then, communication with the Genesis Fire Control and Guidance System allows for the correct leveling of the weapon’s steering mechanisms and shot correction, aiming at precise target range.

The Inertial Targeting System performed well throughout the entire battery of tests. Its use may significantly increase the tactical capacity of the 120mm mortar in the theater of operations, given the automation and speed in the analysis and correction of aim procedures. The system also offers increased target location capability, greater effectiveness, and accuracy.

The electronic processing of the artillery data also facilitates the training of the troops, who can work with simple information that is easy to interpret, ensuring greater agility in understanding the situation and in the correct positioning of the mortar.

The constant modernization of weapons and military equipment is a priority for the Brazilian Army, which relies on war arsenals and the Manufacturing Directorate for the development and incorporation of state-of-the-art military technology.
