Operation Ágata Amazônia

Tefé (AM) – Members of the 16th Jungle Infantry Brigade, working to protect the Western Amazon and maintain Brazil’s sovereignty, achieved significant results in Operation Ágata Amazônia – 2024.

The integrated actions were carried out together with IBAMA in the channel of the Japurá River and its tributaries. In total, 36 dredgers were neutralized/destroyed, as well as pushers, rafts, bases and garimpeiro workshops, generating a major impact on criminal agents.

With 9,726 km covered, the operation had a wide reach, preserved 80 hectares and prevented the release of 26 kg of mercury into the region’s river waters. Two Indigenous Lands (Apaporis and Mapari) were patrolled, and Civic-Social Actions were carried out to help around 120 Amazonians/traditional peoples.

In addition, the forces seized ammunition and weapons, intensifying border security. This operation reinforced the relentless commitment to defending the homeland and combating environmental and cross-border crimes in the Amazon.

Combating environmental crime in the Javari Valley

As part of Operation Ágata Amazônia – 2024, which is taking place throughout the Western Amazon, soldiers from the 1st Special Border Platoon of the Solimões Border Command/8th Jungle Infantry Battalion seized a hunting weapon, tracajá and a large quantity of chelonian eggs during an inspection in the channel of the Javari River, on the border with Peru.
