December 3, 2024 marked the technical delivery of the São Félix do Araguaia armored boat to the Amazon Military Command. The next stage is a process of doctrinal experimentation under the supervision of the Amazon Operations Command, which aims to validate and adjust the operational requirements of the boat, which will enable direct action against crimes such as deforestation, illegal mining and drug trafficking on the riverside borders.
The result of a strategic partnership between the Brazilian Army and the Brazilian Navy, the São Félix do Araguaia is a modern vessel that combines armor and ballistic protection with high mobility in inland waters. Designed to transport an armed and equipped Infantry Combat Group, the boat guarantees the safety of the troops without compromising the operational requirements necessary for patrolling in areas that are difficult to access.
Combating environmental and cross-border crimes
The Amazon Military Command’s riverine operations are fundamental to protecting national interests and supporting local populations, as the Amazon’s rivers, known as the region’s “natural highways”, are strategic routes for national defense and integration.
The fight against environmental and cross-border crimes, the protection of riverside communities and the preservation of the Amazon’s natural wealth are an essential part of the Brazilian Army’s work in the area and a permanent commitment.
With São Félix do Araguaia, patrol and defense operations on the “river roads” will become more efficient and far-reaching, reinforcing the Brazilian Army’s presence and readiness in the region to protect not only the territory, but also the biodiversity and natural resources that are essential for Brazil’s future.
Brazil’s Defense Industrial Base and integration
The production of the vessel by the Rio de Janeiro Navy Arsenal (AMRJ) increases Brazil’s Defense Industrial Base and contributes to strengthening the national economy, generating jobs and developing cutting-edge technology. The integration between the Army and the Navy expands the capabilities of the Armed Forces and reaffirms the joint commitment to national sovereignty and the sustainable development of the region.
