Combined Operation and Rotation Exercise – CORE 24

Brasília (DF) – Members of the Brazilian Army, specialists in operating in the Amazon environment, are about to embark on CORE 24, training with the US Army. The troops that will be deploying from August 4 have a high level of training in all combat functions, the result of ongoing preparation that has included nine exercises focused on CORE 23 and CORE 24.

Since March 2023, the 23rd Jungle Infantry Brigade (23rd Bda Inf Sl) has been conducting Munduruku exercises with the aim of raising the level of training of its troops. Operation Munduruku I, held from March 6 to 10, 2023, marked the beginning of this series of intensive training exercises. This exercise focused on the development of leadership in the small fractions and troop cohesion. During the operation, various training activities were carried out, including Fraction Real Shooting Exercise, navigation, combat conduct and communications. Another five exercises took place before CORE 23, an activity carried out with the US Army in November 2023.

In 2024, another three exercises were held in preparation for CORE 24, which will take place in August in the United States. Most recently, the 23rd Bda Inf Sl conducted the Live Simulation of the Munduruku IX exercise between June 24 and 27, 2024. More than 1,000 soldiers from various subordinate Military Organizations took part in this activity, coming from municipalities such as Marabá, Itaituba, Tucuruí (PA) and Imperatriz (MA). The exercise, which took place in the municipality of Itupiranga (PA), included complex actions such as detailed planning, airmobile assault, night infiltration, attacking defensive positions and integration with cavalry troops.

The Munduruku exercises, in addition to preparing the subunit that will be embarking for the United States, have a positive impact on the entire 23rd Bda Inf Sl. Through these training sessions, the Brigade has managed to raise the level of training of its troops, ensuring that all combat functions are integrated and operational.

Combined Operation and Rotation Exercise

CORE is an acronym for Combined Operations and Rotation Exercise. The initiative has its origins in Exercise Culminating, which took place in 2021 in the United States, when Brazilian airborne troops took part in training with American military personnel.

Following the activity, a cooperation program was signed that provides for annual bilateral exercises until 2028, taking place alternately in each country. The CORE Exercises involve the participation of the Brazilian Army’s Readiness Forces, made up of troops who have undergone rigorous training and have been certified as a rapid response unit for the fulfillment of Ground Force missions.

Each year, the visiting troops are integrated into a unit from the host country. So far, two editions have been held in Brazil, in São Paulo and in the northern region (Pará and Amapá), as well as one in the United States.
