Marjayoun (Lebanon) – On May 26, at the Miguel de Cervantes Base, headquarters of the Eastern Sector Multinational Brigade Command in the United Nations Interim Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), took place the ceremony of transfer of authorities between the Spanish Brigades ‘Rey Alfonso XIII’, II de la Legion, from Almeria, and the ‘Almogavares VI’ Parachute Brigade, from Madrid.

The paratroop brigade is called the Lebanon Brigade XXXIX (BRILIB XXXIX), and its staff will include seven Brazilian military personnel, being two majors, two captains, a sub-lieutenant, and two first sergeants, who will be part of the brigade’s General Staff (MS), in the Operations, Intelligence, Logistics, Communications, Command and Control, and Protocol sections.

The Brazilian Defense, Naval, Army and Air Force Attaché in Lebanon, Colonel Emerson Afonso Azevedo Costa, accompanied by the Defense Attaché in Lebanon, Lieutenant Ivan de Souza Caeiro Junior, participated in the activities of the Brazilian military’s transfer of functions.

After arriving in Lebanese lands, the 18th Brazilian Contingent in Lebanon held the transfer of functions with the Brazilian military of the previous contingent. Since the year 2014, Brazilian military personnel have been employed with the Spanish Brigades’ MS in the southern Lebanese territory, more specifically on the border between Lebanon and Israel, in order to maintain the peace established within the context of the UNIFIL mission.

This participation also contributes to demonstrate the ability to deploy Brazilian troops abroad in combined military operations and to strengthen the image of Brazil among nations participating in peacekeeping missions of the United Nations (UN).
